Semester 4 Course 1- System Ontologies
Location- Andheri East, Mumbai
Flyovers are an important of the daily commute of people. Many flyovers are a part of the Western Express highway the run north-south in the city of Mumbai connecting several suburbs. One of these is a flyover in Andheri East, where the space underneath the flyover remains unused over these years.
The module's brief was designing a space to share knowledge. The module also required us to work in a group of two. The site chosen was in the city that we have grown up in and knew well. After looking at the site, we started with the specifications, that is the exact measurements, directions, etc for the site. Main focus in the module became the technical details and the material specifications. In the middle of the concrete jungle, that is heavily jammed in day, this space opens up as a night library along with several other programmes that allows the commuters a break.
The site consisted of the flyover slab supported by a column beam grid with 20-meter broad roads on both sides and an under-construction metro along one road. The column grid comprised of 4 columns in each row and selected areas comprised of 4 such rows. This provided us a base to start working upon. Initial ideas began with creating public spaces such as amphitheatres for workshops, study pods, storage of library space, but after certain iterations, along with the floor space the height also came into use, thus, using the height below the flyover, platforms that support programmes such as night library, exhibit space, washrooms, a cafeteria space and a storage was designed.
