Semester 3 Course 2
Location- Navapada settlement, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali (East), Mumbai
The Navapada settlement in SGNP is accessed through an open buffer space with trees and undulating ground.
Why not use the undulations to make the space more interesting....
The settlement is located on the hills of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, thus is lower from one end. On studying the pattern of rainwater flowing through the settlement, it seemed to accumulate in this open space along the road and before the start of the settlement. The accumulation of water
reduced the usage of the space.
The space consists of a government housing on one side and a private garden on the opposite side along the road. Another edge have the settlement along it with a house which is half built and is now used for dumping materials like wood and stones.
The idea was to magnify the undulations to channelize and the water and form mounds that act as a space for social gathering.
The entire buffer space used to be covered with water and the entry and exit to the settlement became difficult for the people. By channelizing this water, the remaining space can be utilized well.
The people of Navapada enjoy their own garden spaces for growing various vegetables by themselves. The space of the half built house can be extended and used in order to make a community garden and a common covered seating at the entrance of the settlement.
Along with the community garden, other programmes can be introduced such as a pavilion for the kids to climb and play and a parking space for the scooters that are mostly parked along the roadside right now. this could be connected properly by a w
Construction details- Bamboo is hollow along its length. Two bamboos can be fixed by fixing them internally to a steel rod of the internal diameter. In a similar way, three bamboos can be connected by fixing them to 3 steel rods welded at a point. This can be repeated to connect multiple bamboos at a point to form the structure without making it complicated. This can be fastened with screws making sure the bamboo does not slide out.
