Semester 4 Course 2
Location- Assumption Church, Kandivali West, Mumbai
How can a museum share information which has never been recorded but has been witnessed?
The church in this suburb and the site have a long history. This has included the intervention of the Holy See and the Portuguese, the rebuilding and establishment of the church, the chapel and the school. The ground has also witnessed a sporting club whose records are preserved by the church. The new museum will be dedicated to the history of the village and the church along with a display of artefacts gifted from other churches. This museum intends to extend the church outside the walls, blurring the lines between the people who have formed settlements in this suburb.
Museum of Suburban Consecration
Museum as-
A register. The museum might not only be a gallery walk, but also a space where the people who have witnessed these changes can share it through gatherings thus making it an experience museum. The new design allows a landscape around the church formed between the spaces of the museum to enable these activities along with a change in the existing chapel to provide a more spatial space for prayer and meditation.
